Exploring the twilight transformation of Jachthaven Valkenburg, manipulating sound and video to evoke suspended moments of transition.
SCOPE / APPROACH :
Liminal spaces exist in the thresholds between familiar boundaries, embodying a state of in-between where the known dissolves, and the unknown begins to form. These spaces evoke a sense of transition, disorientation, and fleeting reality. They invite us to dwell within uncertainty, where time and place seem suspended.
In this installation, Jachthaven Valkenburg, a marina nestled in the Dutch landscape next to industrial terrain, becomes the setting for an exploration of this very liminality. As the sun slowly sets, its descent marks a gradual shift—both spatial and temporal—that blurs the edges of perception. Light fades, shadows stretch, and what was once clear becomes uncertain and shifts into difference.
Through the manipulation of sound and video recordings, the installation captures and heightens these moments of transition. The interplay between the natural progression of the day and the distorted recordings creates a disorienting temporal experience. Time itself is altered, and the marina, once a site of function, is transformed into an abstracted, liminal space where meaning is fluid.
By lingering in these moments of twilight, the work invites reflection on our relationship with spaces that resist definition. Jachthaven Valkenburg becomes a metaphor for all spaces that exist between: neither here nor there, not past nor future. In this suspended reality, we are invited to reconsider our perception of time, space, and the transient nature of our surroundings.
