CROWDSOURCING MEINERSWIJK

Exploring alternative urban development approaches for a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated as a recreational area through an interactive crowdsourcing installation in a artificial virtual reality environment.

CASE:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Arnhem designated as a recreational area is doomed for development.

Stadsblokken-Meinerswijk is a floodplain area situated on the southern bank of the Rhine River, directly across from Arnhem's city center. Its history dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, boasting numerous cultural and historical artifacts alongside the quaint hamlet of De Praets.

Currently, the Municipality of Arnhem, in collaboration with Kondor Wessels Projecten, is undertaking renovation and repurposing efforts across various sections of the area.

APPROACH:

These decisions are often made without significant input from local residents who frequent the area. Known for its tranquility, the site offers refuge from urban noise, and is devoid of commercial activities. When finding out about the impending changes i thought of alternative perspectives for executing such projects, and chose crowdsourcing as a suitable domain.

For this installation i employed a custom interface which allows users to manipulate prefabricated building blocks in a three-dimensional space, facilitating active participation in the area's design.

Developed using the Unity platform and utilizing 3D design software Blender for creating building blocks, the installation immerses users in a virtual representation of the site. They can visualize different types of buildings within the space, with each structure offering two distinct variations.

Users are encouraged to evaluate and rate proposed designs, enabling community engagement in the planning process. The intention is to curate feedback, ultimately selecting the development plan most favored by users, provided it aligns with feasibility considerations and is possible to be realised. This approach aims to democratize the decision-making process, prioritizing the preferences and concerns of those who frequent and cherish the recreational area.
